March 2006 Newsletter

Dear Parents

As we are now in the six term year, I need to welcome you all back to ‘Term 4’.

With the weather improving we have a number of outdoor activities planned for the children, finishing with our annual Easter Egg Hunt during the final week of term.

Meanwhile the children are working hard on their literacy, numeracy and science targets, which I know the class teachers have shared with you during the recent Parent Consultations. Your continued support at home really helps your child achieve and is much valued by the teaching staff.

School Uniform

Whilst most children do wear the correct uniform to school, there are a few who do not conform to our regulations, particularly regarding appropriate footwear. Our dress code stipulates sensible black shoes (or sandals for the summer months). So if you are buying new shoes for your child in the near future, please remember that trainers are not acceptable in school for everyday wear. Equally, many of the more fashionable girls’ shoes are actually proving dangerous when the children run around in the playground.

As a reminder we have attached a list of the full uniform which children are expected to wear.

Creative Partnerships

Our project got off to an exciting start with all children in the school enthused when working with our poets (John and Justin) and our artist Len Shelley. You may have seen the excellent coverage in the Rye Observer.

The project will continue with children in Year 4 working on a regular basis with our poets and artists.

In the summer term we hope to involve all the children in the school again and invite parents to an exhibition which will be held in Rye.

World Book Day – Thursday 2nd March

All the children thoroughly enjoyed writing book reviews, designing book jackets and posters and listening to stories / poems.

‘ Reading Connects’

We are pleased to announce that we are a “Reading Connects” school, which is a national reading campaign to raise the profile of reading at a time when so much modern technology is visual and leaves nothing to the imagination.

Please visit the 'National Literacy Trust' site where you will find recommended reads for your children.

Thank you Mrs Turner for organising both events

Spare Underwear

Diamond class are desperate for spare underwear to use when children have an accident and wet themselves. If you have any which your child has outgrown, please could you send them into school. Thank you.

Bus Lay-by

Once again we need to remind parents that parking or dropping off children in the bus lay-by is not permitted at any time. Please park across the road in Kings Avenue, and let your children cross with the lollipop lady. This warning is for your child’s own safety!

Tissues

We are getting through a huge number of tissues, therefore, we would be very grateful if you could supply your child with a pack of ‘handy andys’ or a hanky. Many thanks.

Tokens

It’s that time of year again when we are collecting all tokens, including Sainsbury’s, Nestle, Tesco computer, and Persil Stars. Please spread the word to your friends and relatives so they can pass any on to your children to bring into school.

Micheal Foster MP visited Diamond and Sapphire Classes

On Friday 13th January, our MP, Michael Foster came to speak to the children in Diamond and Sapphire classes about his work as a Member of Parliament. This was as part of their topic on ‘Famous and Important People’. The children prepared questions in advance for Mr Foster to answer and they very much enjoyed talking to him about his work.

PCSO Dan Bevan visited Diamond and Sapphire

On Wednesday 8th February, our Police Community Liaison Officer, Dan Bevan, came to speak to the children in Diamond and Sapphire Classes, as part of their topic on ‘Famous and Important People’. He brought his bike with him and spent time answering questions about what his work involves. The children were totally absorbed with what he had to say and have learnt a great deal about the importance of his job in our community. Thank you, Dan.

School Governors

Following our recent letter requesting nominations for a parent governor to join our governing body, we were disappointed to find that we did not receive any nominations. If you feel you might like to become a member, but are unsure of what it actually entails, please contact Mrs Ball in the school office who will put you in contact with a current governor for an informal chat.

We are pleased to inform you that we have elected two new community governors, they are Liz Butt who is our music therapist and visits school every Thursday and Dan Bevan our local Police Community Support Officer. Both will be a great asset to our governing body.

PAFA – Parents And Friends Association

We are also always looking for further PAFA members. Planning for the Summer Fayre has already started, but we would like to widen the range of events we can offer to children and parents alike. We can’t do this without your help. Have a word with one of our committee members (Jane Elcombe, Clair Emson, Pam Timms, Jo Greenfield or Flora Williams) in the playground or come into school office and speak to Sue Freeman.

Race Night -Friday 24th March

We are running this night in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce, as a joint venture to raise money for our school and the Christmas lights in Rye.

Please invite your friends and relations to come and have a fun night out for just £3.50. This includes a buffet supper, (bring your own drinks and a glass.) Book your tickets now, by either filling in the form sent home to you, or ringing the school who will send you a form to fill in
