The Jota

Christmas is a deeply religious time in Spain. On Christmas Eve, tiny oil lamps are lit in every house, and most people go to Midnight Mass. After Mass, Christmas Dinner is eaten. When dinner is finished,  people take to the streets to join in the festivities: dancing, singing, playing guitars and tambourines. Also, there is a special Christmas dance called the Jota, who's words and music are very old .

Most homes have a nativity, complete with carved figures, similar to those in the cathedrals and churches. During the weeks before Christmas, families gather around their mangers to pray and sing, whilst the children play tambourines and dance.

Spanish children receive gifts on the feast of the Epiphany - 6th of January. The three Wise Men travel through the countryside re-enacting their journey to Bethlehem: Children leave their shoes on the windowsills and fill them with straw, carrots, and barley for the Wise Men's camels. By morning the camel food is gone and in its place are present for the children.
